It will be early to rise for the Machias boys and girls varsity basketball teams as they attempt to play the final regular-season games of the season statewide on Saturday.

The Bulldogs will leave at 6 a.m. for a doubleheader at Islesboro, boarding the ferry at Lincolnville at 10 a.m. in time for the 11:15 a.m. opening tip-off for the girls game. The boys are scheduled to play at 1 p.m., with the teams then catching the ferry back to the mainland by 3:30 p.m. or 4 p.m.

The games have been postponed twice this week, first on Wednesday and then Friday, both because of inclement weather.

The Machias boys (15-2) are ranked second in Class D North and don’t figure to move from that spot no matter the outcome of that game.

But Islesboro (11-6) is ranked seventh in Class D South and could move up as many as two spots with a win, though Machias defeated the Eagles 76-50 in their earlier meeting on Jan. 19.

The Machias girls are ranked fifth in Class D North with a 9-8 record and should stay in that spot regardless of the outcome against 2-14 Islesboro. The Eagles might sneak into the Class D South playoffs with an upset win, but Machias dominated the earlier meeting 46-17.
