CHELSEA – Harold William Wicks, 88, died at home after a long illness with his family and dog Tucker by his side. He was born in Wantagh, New York in 1927, the son of William and Mary (Nolan) Wicks.
Harold served in the United States Army, Calvary Division, from 1945-48, spending time on the Germany/Czechoslovakia border. When he returned he married Phyllis Mazzota.
Harold received a nursing degree from Dayton University in Ohio and then served in the United States Air Force as a Registered Nurse. In 1961 he received a Masters of Public Health from Yale University. He was an administrator at Pittsfield General Hospital in Massachusetts, Carey Memorial in Caribou, Maine and Augusta General Hospital in Augusta, Maine. In retirement he volunteered for the Viles Arboretum and Literacy Volunteers.
Harold grew up on a farm on Long Island and wherever he lived he continued the tradition of gardening. He also loved being outdoors and staying active, nordic skiing and hiking being two of his favorite activities. He was a lover of literature, ballroom dancing, and art. He painted many pictures of his beloved horses and his pet terriers.
Harold was predeceased by his parents, his brother William, his first wife and mother of his children, Phyllis, and his beloved grandson Christopher William Wicks.
He is survived by his four children and their spouses, son Mark and wife Janet of Readfield, Maine, son Wayne and wife Julie of Port St. Lucie, Florida, daughter Trina and husband Steve of Boscawen, New Hampshire, and daughter Tara and husband Steve, also of Readfield; his beloved grandchildren Matthew, Hannah, Rebecca, Tyler, Katherine, Natalie and Luca; sister Rita and her husband Len, sister Linda, and brother John, all of New York; and many nieces and nephews.
Some of Harold’s proudest moments came from his grandchildren’s accomplishments.
He will be missed by many special people in his life, including his second wife Joan Lancaster and his personal aide, Linda Trexler.
Friends and relatives are invited to a gathering Friday, February 26, 2016 from 4-7 p.m. at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, One Church Street, Augusta. Words of remembrance will be shared at 6:00 p.m.
