SANFORD, Maine — Residents of a Sanford apartment will have to find another place to stay after a two-alarm fire early Saturday morning.
Firefighters responded to 18 Church St. around 12:30 a.m. Saturday, finding flames coming out of a second-floor bedroom window in the apartment building.
Fire crews had the blaze under control within 30 minutes, but the fire caused considerable damage to the apartment. Two people were taken to a nearby hospital.
Firefighters from several towns responded to the Sanford fire, as well as the fire marshal’s office. The people inside the apartment told investigators the fire likely was caused by the improper disposal of smoking materials.
Church Street was closed but reopened Saturday morning.
