UNION, Maine — The Knox County Sheriff’s Office said it has stepped up patrols in the Union area after a series of break-ins last month that included a home invasion in which a woman was assaulted.
Then on Wednesday afternoon, the sheriff’s office dealt with a suspicious incident near Union Commons in which a man allegedly knocked on the door of an elderly woman’s home while saying he had a delivery. But when the woman got to the door, the man was gone. The resident alerted police and said she had not ordered anything.
Deputies searched the area but found nothing, Chief Deputy Tim Carroll said Thursday.
The chief deputy said the investigation also continues into a Feb. 10 home invasion on Sennebec Road in which a woman first came to the door asking if a specific person was at the home. The resident reportedly informed the woman she must have the wrong house and the woman left. A few moments later, however, there was a knock on the door and a man allegedly burst in and assaulted the woman before taking off with money and other items.
There also were five motor vehicle burglaries that occurred that night in Union and Appleton.
Carroll said that since police patrols were increased in the area, there have not been additional burglaries.
