BRUNSWICK, Maine — Last week, a black Lab mix from Brunswick named Buddy was brought to the Coastal Humane Society after being abused.

Buddy was brought to the shelter with a broken leg. Vets say the leg had been broken for about a week before arriving at the shelter and he was in a lot of pain. He had to have the leg amputated. He is recovering nicely.

The good news is Buddy is heading west to a prison rehabilitation program in Michigan. The program is called Making Pawsitive Changes. Carefully selected inmates will work with Buddy on basic obedience and building self-confidence.

“I was actually out at this program in February, so I got to see it firsthand,” said Dr. Mandie Wehr of the Coastal Humane Society. “I got to meet the inmates who have been selected to work. I saw some of the dogs. I saw the amazing work they’re doing. So when Buddy came along and we were trying to decide and assessing his anxiety and stress needs, I remembered that program, so I picked up the phone and I called to see if they’d be willing to take him.”

“He doesn’t let it affect him at all. You can’t tell that he’s been mistreated, except for the wounds on his body. He hasn’t let it crush his spirit at all. He still loves every human, dog, animal we’ve come in contact with since we had him. He’s loose and ready to go meet ’em,” said Kaleigh Manning, assistant manager at Coastal Humane Society.

The rehab program last about three months, and after that he’ll be placed in a loving home.
