ROCKLAND, Maine — The cause of a Thursday fire that heavily damaged one apartment in a three-story, 7-unit apartment complex on Main Street is still undetermined, a state fire marshal investigator said Friday.

Investigator Mary-Ann MacMaster said at noon that she was still looking into the cause of the fire but that there was nothing to consider it suspicious.

There were no injuries, but a first-floor apartment was heavily damaged by fire. The residents of the apartment complex had to find other housing overnight with the assistance of the American Red Cross, families and friends. Electrical work was expected to be done Friday to allow the occupants of six of the seven apartments to go back home.

Fire Chief Adam Miceli said Thursday that crews were able to get water on the fire quickly and stop the blaze from spreading in the walls, which the chief said would have resulted in a much more severe fire because of the age, construction and “somewhat maze-like configuration” of the building. He praised the efforts of the Rockland crew and firefighters from Rockport that arrived quickly and helped to contain the blaze. The Thomaston Fire Department also sent members to the apartment complex.

The building is owned by Erik Nelson and Dona Bergen of Tenants Harbor, according to city records. The property is assessed at $265,000.
