Colby names new women’s soccer coach
WATERVILLE — Kristin Shaw, a former player in the Women’s Premier Soccer League with collegiate coaching experience at NCAA Division I and III levels, has been named head coach of the Colby College’s women’s soccer team.
Just the seventh head coach since the women’s soccer program began in 1979, Shaw comes to Colby from Villanova University, where she spent two years as an assistant coach. Prior to Villanova, she was the head coach at Smith College, where she improved a struggling team, coaching the Pioneers’ first all-conference first team selection since 2006.
“Coach Shaw’s career at the highest levels of intercollegiate soccer, coupled with her teaching and coaching experience, help provide her with the skills to take Colby soccer to the next level.” Tim Wheaton, Colby’s Harold Alfond Director of Athletics, said in a news release.
Shaw, who started her collegiate coaching career in 2006 at the University of Albany, was heavily involved with the New England Mutiny of the Women’s Premier Soccer League. She played for the Mutiny from 2006 to 2008, was head coach of the Under-20 Team in 2011, and was general manager and head coach of the elite team in 2012.

According to the Miami-Dade police department, Walker, 23, was riding a dirt bike when he collided with a car on Thursday. He was taken to a Miami hospital.
Walker, who grew up in Miami, appeared in eight games for the Ravens, mostly on special teams, during his rookie campaign last season.
His agent, Ron Butler, said Walker was surrounded by friends and family when he was pulled off of life support around 5 p.m. local time Friday at the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. Butler said Walker never showed any brain activity after arriving at the hospital on Thursday.
Patriots sign three; Belichick’s son named safeties coach
The New England Patriots made several noteworthy moves on Friday.
They officially announced the signing of three players — defensive end Chris Long, linebacker Shea McClellin and running back Donald Brown.
The Patriots also announced that Steve Belichick, son of head coach Bill Belichick, has been named the team’s safeties coach. He replaces Brian Flores, who was moved to linebackers coach after Patrick Graham left to join the New York Giants.
Long, 30, played eight NFL seasons with the St. Louis Rams, but he was released by the Rams last month. He played in 12 games in 2015, including five starts, and had three sacks.
McClellin, 26, played four seasons with the Chicago Bears. He played in 12 games last season, including 11 starts, and made 53 tackles.
Brown, 28, played with the San Diego Chargers last season, and he rushed for 229 yards and had eight receptions in 2015. He was released by San Diego earlier this month.
49ers hire five assistant coaches
The San Francisco 49ers formally announced the hiring of five assistant coaches on Friday.
Joe Bowden was named inside linebackers coach and Vince Oghobaase will be an assistant defensive line coach. Dana Bible was tabbed as a senior analyst, Tem Lukabu as defensive quality control and Kevin O’Connell will handle special projects.
Bowden spent the last four seasons as an assistant linebackers coach with the Rams. Bible is entering his fifth NFL campaign but is a long-time college assistant. O’Connell had a brief NFL career as a quarterback but didn’t pan out after being a third-round pick of the New England Patriots in 2008 and he worked for the Cleveland Browns last season.
Lukabu is entering his third NFL season and Oghobaase is beginning his first.
