ROCKLAND, Maine — A second candidate has taken out papers to seek the vacant city council seat.

Mike Herbert took out nomination papers Monday for the seat vacated two weeks ago by William Jillson.

Herbert is employed by Regional School Unit 13 as a van driver. For 13 years previously he managed the Working Waterfront newspaper published by the Island Institute in Rockland.

Herbert is a Rockland native and graduated from Rockland District High School. He earned two bachelor’s degrees from the University of Maine — in recreation and park management and in secondary education.

He lives on Mechanic Street with his wife and they have adult children.

Herbert joins Adam Ackor as a candidate seeking the available seat.

Candidates must collect the signatures of at least 100 registered Rockland voters by May 2 to get on the June 14 ballot. The term will run through November 2018.
