BANGOR, Maine — A Bangor man who was injured when the van he was driving struck the back of a tractor-trailer on Interstate 95 in Fairfield on Saturday remained at a Portland hospital on Sunday.
Kenneth Billings, 56, was listed in serious condition at Maine Medical Center, a nursing supervisor said Sunday afternoon.
State police Cpl. Diane Vance said Saturday that the crash happened at 7:48 a.m. in the southbound lanes of I-95.
According to witnesses, Billings’ green 1998 Mercury Villager van was being driven erratically and at high speed before the crash. Billings was alone in the vehicle.
Truck driver Mason Markley, 40, of Danielson, Connecticut, had just come on to I-95 from the Fairfield exit with a load of paper products bound for Arizona when the crash occurred, Vance said.
At first, Markley thought he had gotten a flat tire before he realized he was dragging a van behind him, she said.
One lane of I-95 was closed for four hours and reopened early Saturday afternoon, while agencies including the Maine State Police, the Fairfield Police Department, the Waterville and Fairfield fire departments, Delta Ambulance and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement worked to clear the scene.
The crash, which remains under investigation, was reconstructed and forensically mapped by Maine State Police officials, Vance said.
