STANDISH, Maine — A Portland man was injured Tuesday morning after a police chase ended with a crash on Route 35, according to state police.
Police allegedly began pursuing Raymond Ireland, 33, in Freeport when an officer in that town recognized him and tried to pull him over, Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said.
Ireland had been wanted on a number of charges, McCausland said.
State police later spotted Ireland’s vehicle on the Falmouth spur of the Maine Turnpike, and like Freeport officers, troopers broke off pursuit due to Ireland’s erratic driving.
Later, troopers and Cumberland County sheriff’s deputies found the vehicle along Route 35 in the Standish area and engaged pursuit, McCausland said.
Ireland’s tires were flattened by a deputy’s spike mat, and the vehicle, which was overdue from a rental car company, overturned and came to rest on its wheels, McCausland said.
Ireland was taken to Maine Medical Center for treatment and will face charges relating to the chase upon his discharge, McCausland said.
