ROCKPORT, Maine — The 16-year-old driver who was seriously injured in a March 20 car crash in Camden has died.
The Maine Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Wednesday that Robert Bishop of Rockport died Tuesday. The office will conduct an examination Wednesday to confirm the cause of death, which is routine when the victim is a minor.
Bishop was the driver of a 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe that crashed into a tree while driving west on the Hosmer Pond Road shortly before 11 p.m. March 20.
Camden police Chief Randy Gagne said the investigation into the crash continues with the assistance of the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, but the initial findings are that driver inexperience and speed led to the crash. Bishop did not have a driver’s license.
Three teenage passengers were injured in the crash. None of those injuries were considered life-threatening, with two of the teens driven to the hospital by family members.
Bishop was a sophomore at Camden Hills Regional High School. The school’s crisis team met and will provide support to students and resources to parents who seek it.
