WESTBROOK, Maine — A Westbrook police officer shot a man Saturday morning following an armed confrontation, according to the department’s chief.

Westbrook police officers responded shortly before 6 a.m. to 108 Longfellow St. for a report of a man armed with a handgun who was threatening suicide, according to a news release from Westbrook Chief Janine Roberts. An armed confrontation ensued, and the man was shot by a Westbrook officer, the chief stated.

The man was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where he is being treated for his injury.

The Maine attorney general’s office is investigating the incident, which is standard practice when an officer shoots someone.

Additional information soon will be released, according to the chief.

The property is a three-unit residence owned by Wyer Real Estate LLC, according to the town’s website.
