FREEDOM, Maine — A Waldo man remained behind bars on Thursday after allegedly driving drunk through Freedom.

Zachary Littlefield, 29, caught the eye of Waldo County Sheriff’s Office Deputy James Porter late on Monday afternoon when the deputy saw a car coming at him very fast, according to Sheriff Jeff Trafton. Porter clocked the oncoming vehicle at 93 mph, or 43 mph over the posted speed limit, the sheriff said Thursday morning.

The deputy tried to catch the vehicle, which took a right at the Knox Ridge intersection and headed down Route 220 toward Liberty. Slower drivers ahead of him caused Littlefield to take his foot off the gas enough for the deputy to catch up, Trafton said. Porter pulled Littlefield over near the Hogback Mountain Road in Montville, about 10 minutes after the alleged chase began.

Littlefield was found to be driving while under the influence with a blood alcohol content of 0.16, or twice Maine’s legal limit of 0.08 for operating a vehicle, Trafton said. The driver was twice convicted of operating under the influence in 2010, according to the sheriff.

Littlefield was charged with OUI with two priors, a class C felony, eluding police, operating after suspension, driving to endanger and criminal speed.

He was taken to the Waldo County Correctional Center and 72 hour hold facility in Belfast to be booked and remained in police custody on Thursday, Trafton said.
