BANGOR, Maine — The Husson University baseball team swept Lyndon State while the softball team split with Castleton University in North Atlantic Conference doubleheaders played on campus Saturday.
Junior righthander Ben Walls scattered six hits and two runs over seven innings to give the Husson baseball team a 6-2 win over Lyndon in the first game of a doubleheader at the Winkin Complex.
The Eagles of Bangor (11-9, 6-2 NAC) beat Lyndon (Vt.) in the second game 16-1.
In the first game, Walls walked only one and struck out three. He was backed up by Julien Boone, who tripled, singled and drove in three runs.
Sam Huston added two hits and an RBI for the Eagles while Zach Sugar and J.T. Whitten also each drove in a run and singled.
Michael Pena and Jake Jourdain each had an RBI for Lyndon (3-13, 0-4 NAC).
In the second game, the Eagles banged out 15 hits to support winning pitcher Ryan Allender, who gave up four hits and a run in four innings. He walked one and struck out three.
Sugar had a single, sacrifice fly and three RBIs to lead the Eagles. Huston chipped in with two hits and two RBIs and Christian Corneil smacked a two-run triple.
Whitten chipped in with two hits for the Eagles while Dylan Graffam had a two-run triple and Darik Messier had a two-run double.
In softball action at O’Keefe Field, Kayla Wood tossed a three-hitter, striking out 13 and walking three, and Jessica Babcock had three singles and scored twice as Castleton University salvaged a split of the doubleheader with a 5-2 triumph.
Husson won the opener 3-2 in eight innings.
Both runs off Wood were unearned.
In the nightcap, the Spartans (6-6, 1-1 North Atlantic Conference) parlayed three Husson errors and a Babcock single into two unearned first-inning runs to take the lead for good.
Chelsea Grady and Timi Carone hit RBI singles for Castleton
Elizabeth Richard had an RBI double and Katie Gagne hit two singles for Husson (3-15, 1-1 NAC).
In the opener, Lyndsay Merrill singled home Kristen Chipman in the bottom of the eighth as Husson prevailed.
In accordance with the extra-inning rules, Chipman was placed on second with nobody out and Merrill singled her home.
Castleton hadn’t scored in the top of the eighth.
The Spartans had tied the game in the seventh on Brittany Brayman’s RBI single.
Merrill had four singles for the Eagles, Sami Cyr had an RBI single and Alannah Healy went the distance, allowing 11 hits and one earned run with seven strikeouts and no walks.
Babcock had two singles to go with her double for the Spartans. Carone had two doubles while Brayman and Grady had two singles each.
