Former New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith was shot and killed Saturday night in the city’s Lower Garden District after an apparent road rage incident.

The 34-year-old Smith was shot multiple times, according to law enforcement officials, after his Mercedes was rear-ended by a Hummer H2 and he exchanged words with the driver of the other vehicle. The shooting happened about 11:30 p.m. after a three-car accident.

Smith’s wife, Racquel, 34, was struck twice by shots in the right leg, police said, and was taken to a hospital. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the driver of the Hummer, Cardell Hayes, 28, was charged with second-degree murder. The handgun that fired the shots was recovered, police said.

Smith’s family released a statement Sunday morning: “On behalf of the Smith family, we are thankful for the outpouring of support and prayers. We ask that you continue to respect the family’s privacy as they grieve the loss of a devoted husband, father and friend.”

Former Saints running back Pierre Thomas arrived to the scene Saturday night after reportedly having been out during the evening with Smith and his wife.

A Saints spokesman confirmed Smith’s death by tweeting a statement: “A senseless and tragic loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with Will Smith — his wife Racquel — his children William, Wynter and Lisa.”

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell in a statement called the killing “such a tragic loss of life. Our thoughts are with Will’s wife Racquel and their three children. He will be missed by many teammates and friends.”

Drafted No. 18 overall in 2004 out of Ohio State, Smith spent nine seasons with the Saints and was named to the Pro Bowl in 2006. He ranks fourth in team history in career sacks with 67.5, including a career-best 13 in 2009 when the Saints went on to win the Super Bowl.

Smith’s last season with the Saints was in 2012.

Saints coach Sean Payton and former teammates and players in the sports world expressed their grief on Twitter.

“Heavy Hearts w the senseless passing of our Team Capt. Will Smith. Pray for his wife’s recovery and their children,” Payton wrote.

Drew Brees tweeted: “Mourning the loss of a great friend and teammate, Will Smith. Such a senseless tragedy. Please pray for Racquel and their children.”
