Patriots release RB Gaffney
The New England Patriots on Monday released running back Tyler Gaffney.
Gaffney, 24, spent the past two seasons with New England.
The 6-foot, 220-pounder, originally entered the NFL as a sixth-round draft pick by the Carolina Panthers out of Stanford in the 2014 NFL Draft.
He’s has not been able to stay healthy after rushing for 1,709 yards and 21 touchdowns at Stanford in 2013.
He spent 2014 on injured reserve with New England.
And in training camp last season, he was injured again and spent the entire season on injured reserve.
Bruins sign Denver’s Heinen to three-year deal
The Boston Bruins on Monday signed forward Danton Heinen to a three-year entry-level contract, beginning with the 2016-17 season.
He was the Bruins’ fourth-round pick in the 2014 draft.
Heinen finished up his sophomore season at the University of Denver scoring 48 points on 20 goals and 28 assists.
Doubront to have Tommy John surgery
Oakland Athletics left-handed starting pitcher Felix Doubront will undergo Tommy John surgery on his throwing elbow Tuesday and miss the rest of the season.
An initial diagnosis of a torn ulnar collateral ligament was reaffirmed on Monday by an MRI and that Doubront, 28, would need to have surgery to reconstruct the ligament.
He won a spot in the rotation out of camp, but left his final exhibition start on April 2 after just one inning with tightness in his forearm.
He was placed on the 15-day disabled list to start the season.
Last season Doubront started eight games for the Athletics and went 2-2 with a 5.38 ERA.
Giants add three players
The New York Giants announced Monday they signed three players: linebacker Kelvin Sheppard, running back Bobby Rainey and tackle Byron Stingily.
Sheppard has played in 77 regular-season games with 45 starts for Buffalo, Indianapolis and Miami, and started both postseason games in which he played for the Colts.
He played in all 16 games with 13 starts for the Dolphins. He finished second on the team with 102 tackles (72 solo) and third with 13 tackles for losses.
Rainey has played in 46 games for three NFL teams with 11 starts. In 2015, Rainey was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ leading punt and kickoff returner while playing in all 16 games.
Stingily played 20 games with nine starts for the Tennessee Titans from 2012 through 2014. Last season, he was waived at the end of training camp.
Cubs acquire LHP Soto from Indians
The Chicago Cubs acquired left-hander Giovanni Soto from the Cleveland Indians for a cash consideration on Monday.
Soto was then optioned to Triple-A Iowa. To make room for Soto on the 40-man roster, catcher Kyle Schwarber was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.
Soto, 24, made his major league debut with the Indians last season and turned in six scoreless relief appearances over 3 1/3 innings.
With Triple-A Columbus last year, Soto went 2-1 with two saves and a 2.68 ERA over 53 2/3 innings in 46 appearances, all but one in relief.
Soto was originally selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 21st round of the 2009 draft and was acquired by the Indians a year later. In seven minor league seasons, Soto is 25-25 with four saves and a 3.10 ERA in 167 minor league appearances, including 64 starts.
