SOUTH PARIS, Maine — A South Paris man was arrested Monday afternoon after a raid at his home allegedly turned up fentanyl.

Troy Masterman, 40, was charged with aggravated trafficking in fentanyl, a Class A felony offence punishable by up to 30 years in prison and violation of administrative release, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said Tuesday in a news release.

The approximate street value of the fentanyl is $2,500, he said.

Police executed a search warrant about 3:30 p.m. Monday at Masterman’s Christian Ridge Road home, McCausland said.

During the raid, about 14 grams — the equivalent of 140 doses — of what investigators believed to be fentanyl were discovered, McCausland said. Scales, ledgers and other items suggesting the distribution of drugs also were allegedly found.

The investigation indicated that Masterman was among several people suspected of distributing heroin, fentanyl or both in the towns of Paris, Norway and Oxford, McCausland said.

Masterman is being held at Oxford County Jail. No bail has been set because of his violation of an administrative release from an unrelated charge.

Fentanyl is 30 to 50 times more potent than heroin and is often used in the mixing process with heroin or sold as heroin. There is an increased chance of a user overdosing when they believe the drug they are using is heroin but actually is fentanyl.

The investigation is continuing and additional arrests for heroin and fentanyl distribution are anticipated, McCausland said.
