CARIBOU, Maine — A pair of Woodland residents have been arrested in connection with counterfeit $20, $50 and $100 bills distributed at stores in Caribou and Bangor.
Joshua Brydon, 29, and Shelly Butler, 34, were arrested on Wednesday and each charged with aggravated forgery. Brydon also was charged with violating conditions of release from an unspecified previous offense.
The Caribou Police Department began receiving complaints about counterfeit bills from multiple businesses on Wednesday, according to a news release issued Friday by Chief Michael Gahagan.
Brydon and Butler were apprehended when one of the businesses called to report that the individual responsible for passing the bills were still in the store and officers went to the scene, according to the release.
Caribou police Officer Keith Ouellette is the primary investigator on the case, with assistance from the U.S. Secret Service office in Portland.
Butler has since been released on $10,000 secured bail. Brydon was taken to the Aroostook County Jail in Houlton where he remains held without bail.
