Owners approve jersey advertising
NBA owners approved a three-year pilot program to allow teams to sell a corporate logo on their jerseys, the league announced Friday.
The NBA Board of Governors gave the approval for the sale of jersey sponsorships beginning for 2017-18, which also will be the first season that Nike makes the uniforms after taking over from Adidas. The Nike swoosh will appear on every jersey.
The sponsorship patch will appear on the front left of the game jerseys opposite the Nike logo. Patches will measure approximately 2.5 inches by 2.5 inches and be adjusted to fit the dimensions of each sponsor’s logo.
Sources told ESPN that the average team hopes to make $4-6 million per year from new partnerships, which would equal $120-180 million per year in new revenue. The money will be counted as basketball-related income and split with the players.
Leyland named Team USA manager for 2017 WBC
Jim Leyland, the former manager of four major-league teams, was named the manager of Team USA for the 2017 World Baseball Classic, USA Baseball announced Friday.
Leyland’s last season in the big leagues was 2013 when he managed the Detroit Tigers. Detroit reached the World Series under Leyland in both 2006 and 2012, and he won a World Series with the Miami Marlins in 1997.
The United States has never won the World Baseball Classic. It got to the semifinals in 2009 and lost in the second round in 2006 and 2013.
Buck Martinez (2006), Davey Johnson (2009) and Joe Torre (2013) were the previous Team USA managers.
Rangers’ Lundqvist questionable for Game 2
New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist remains questionable for Saturday’s Game 2 of the first-round playoff series against the Pittsburgh Penguins, and whether he plays will be a game-day decision.
Lundqvist was able to practice Friday after being poked in the eye area by a teammate’s stick in Game 1 on Wednesday night.
If he plays, it would be the 112th straight playoff start for Lundqvist, a streak that began in 2006.
Although the signs point to Lundqvist being available for Saturday’s game, Rangers coach Alain Vigneault did not declare that Lundqvist would start Game 2.
Cavs’ Williams sidelined
Cleveland Cavaliers guard Mo Williams has been ruled out because of knee soreness for Sunday’s Game 1 of the first-round NBA Eastern Conference playoffs series against the Detroit Pistons.
Williams’ status for Game 2 on Wednesday night in Cleveland will be updated early next week.
