Daniel Johnson, who spent last season as a volunteer assistant at Division II Malone University in Canton, Ohio, has been hired as the women’s basketball coach at the University of Maine at Fort Kent.
Johnson replaces Travis Delisle, who resigned to spend more time with his family after directing the Bengals to the semifinals of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association tournament last season.
“I am happy to have a coach of Johnson’s experience in coaching and recruiting come on board at UMFK,” athletic director Bill Ashby said in a news release. We look forward to coach Johnson’s influence in re-establishing UMFK women’s basketball as a USCAA perennial power and a return to championship play in 2017.”
Johnson must rebuild a UMFK roster that included only five true basketball players, including four departing seniors, last winter.
“I’m looking forward to jumping right in, and I believe it will be a challenge, but a fun task to be able to mold a team in my vision,” Johnson said in the press release.
Johnson previously directed the women’s program at Crossroads College in Minnesota for two seasons and was the head women’s coach at Kent State University-Tuscarawas for one season.
He began his coaching career with several years in the Florida high school ranks.
Johnson owns a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s degree in coaching and athletic administration from Concordia University in California.
