ESPN fires Schilling

ESPN fired baseball analyst Curt Schilling on Wednesday, a day after one of his online posts received criticism from the transgender community.

Schilling reposted on Facebook a photo of a large man wearing a wig and women’s clothes, with a caption that read, “LET HIM IN! to the restroom with your daughter or else you’re a narrow-minded, judgmental, unloving racist bigot who needs to die.”

The post was apparently a response to the controversy over a new North Carolina law that wiped out local statutes allowing LGBT individuals to use the bathroom corresponding to the gender with which they identify.

The network said, “ESPN is an inclusive company. Curt Schilling has been advised that his conduct was unacceptable and his employment with ESPN has been terminated.”

Shaw suspended, fined for slur

The NHL suspended Chicago Blackhawks forward Andrew Shaw for one game for using a gay slur and fined him $5,000 for directing an inappropriate gesture at the game officials during a playoff loss to the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday night.

Shaw reacted after being called for a penalty at 17:57 of the third period. He will sit out Game 5 of the series on Thursday night in St. Louis.

“While Mr. Shaw was apologetic and remorseful for both the offensive comments and the inappropriate gesture directed at the on-ice officials, he must be held accountable for his actions,” NHL senior executive vice president of hockey operations Colin Campbell said Wednesday.

“I am sincerely sorry for the insensitive remarks that I made last night while in the penalty box,” Shaw said.

Flyers’ player taken to hospital

PHILADELPHIA — Flyers center Scott Laughton was removed from the ice on a stretcher and taken to a hospital for precautionary reasons after taking a hit in Philadelphia’s playoff game against the Washington Capitals on Wednesday.

Laughton crashed hard into the boards behind the Washington net with 3:49 left in the first period after what appeared to be incidental contact with Capitals defenseman John Carlson.

Ducks sign Thompson

The Anaheim Ducks signed defenseman Keaton Thompson to a three-year entry-level contract after he led his team to the NCAA hockey championship.

Thompson, 20, recorded 17 points (two goals, 15 assists) and 36 penalty minutes in 43 games with the North Dakota Fighting Hawks this season and helped his team win the 2015-16 NCAA title.

Family of fan killed in fall sues

The family of the fan who fell to his death last year from an upper deck at Turner Field has claimed negligence in a lawsuit filed against the Atlanta Braves and Major League Baseball.

The family of 60-year-old Gregory Murrey filed the lawsuit Tuesday, accusing the defendants of disregarding fans’ safety by putting up a guard railing that is only 30 inches tall. The lawsuit said that height is 12 inches short of the industry standard.

Murrey of Alpharetta, Georgia, died after falling into a lower-level stand during an August game against the New York Yankees.

T-Wolves, Thibodeau near deal

The Minnesota Timberwolves appear to be closing in on a deal with Tom Thibodeau to make him their coach and president of basketball operations.

According to multiple media outlets, Thibodeau will land a five-year deal worth approximately $10 million annually that gives him total control of the franchise’s basketball operations.

Thibodeau was fired by the Chicago Bulls last summer after clashes with management and was out of coaching this season. There, he compiled a 255-139 record in the regular season and was 23-28 in the playoffs.
