BRUNSWICK, Maine — A Richmond man was taken to Maine Medical Center on Saturday morning after a single-car crash on Old Portland Road that police said he was lucky to survive.

Howard Langer, 29, was headed east near Rich Road just after 9 a.m. Saturday when he reportedly fell asleep at the wheel and his 2003 Hyundai “took out” a FairPoint utility pole, Brunswick Police Sgt. Paul Hansen said Monday.

“This guy’s really lucky to be alive,” Hansen said.

Brunswick rescue workers took Langer to Maine Medical Center in Portland for evaluation of potential internal injuries, Hansen said.

A hospital spokeswoman said Monday that they had no information on a patient with that name.
