THOMASTON, Maine — A 64-year-old Thomaston man was arrested Tuesday for the second time in two weeks, accused of sexually assaulting children.
Robert J. Robinson was charged Tuesday with a count of felony unlawful sexual contact and a misdemeanor count of unlawful sexual touching, according to Knox County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Tim Carroll. The offenses involve two different children.
Robinson was taken to the Knox County Jail in Rockland. Judge Susan Sparaco set bail at $500 cash on the arrest warrant.
Robinson had been arrested two weeks ago and charged with two counts of Class A gross sexual assault, two counts of Class B unlawful sexual contact and two counts of Class D unlawful sexual touching. The most serious Class A felony offenses each are punishable by up to 30 years in prison
The investigation began April 5 when a parent reported that Robinson had assaulted two children. The investigation by Knox County Detective Justin Twitchell led to him obtaining an arrest warrant from the court and apprehending Robinson.
Robinson had been the animal control officer and a traffic control officer for Thomaston but resigned those positions when the investigation began.
He was released on $25,000 unsecured bail and since had been free.
Since that time, two other children have come forward and were interviewed by Twitchell, Carroll said.
The chief deputy said he was disappointed for the families of the victims by the low bail that has been set both times Robinson was arrested.
