FARMINGTON — University of Maine-Farmington pitchers limited the Colby-Sawyer Chargers to six runs over the weekend to earn a four-game North Atlantic Conference baseball sweep.
The UMF Beavers took 4-0 and 9-1 decisions on Sunday after topping Colby-Sawyer 5-2 and 4-3 on Saturday.
In Sunday’s opener, Kyle Peterson fired a three-hit shutout with three strikeouts and three walks to pace UMF (23-14, 15-9 NAC). Sean Cabaniss doubled and singled, while Ben Keene, Tom Grady and Trevor Hisler contributed a single and an RBI apiece.
Starter Matt Daly took the loss for Colby-Sawyer (13-22, 8-16 NAC).
In Game 2 on Sunday, Jory Humphrey and two relievers combined to hold the Chargers to five hits. Humphrey allowed three hits and one run in 4⅓ innings for the win.
Jimmy Neal knocked in four runs with a two-run home run and a two-run single for the Beavers, while Dustin McCrossin (2 RBIs) and Jordan Croteau (RBI) each provided a double and a single.
Jeff Dunn hit a solo homer for Colby-Sawyer.
In Saturday’s second game, McCrossin’s sacrifice fly in the third was the margin of victory for UMF. He also added an RBI single. Grady singled with an RBI to back Riley Chickering, who spaced nine hits and three runs (one earned) while going the distance.
Connor Henry (double, RBI), Drew Inglisi and Joey Fenuccio led the Chargers with two hits apiece. Starter Henry took the loss.
In Saturday’s opener, Cabaniss plated two runs with a fifth-inning single as UMF prevailed.
Croteau and Neal each singled with an RBI in support of Nate Pushard, who scattered eight hits and two runs (1 earned) in a complete-game effort.
Justin Devoid doubled and singled for Colby-Sawyer. Brendan Thurber (double) and Nathan Frongillo (single) each plated a run. Chris Hood was the losing pitcher.
UMPI sweeps CMCC
At Presque Isle on Saturday, Andrew Bartlett fashioned a five-hit shutout in the first game as the Owls won 6-0 en route to a sweep of the Mustangs.
The University of Maine-Presque Isle won the second game 7-2.
In the opener, Bartlett struck out six and didn’t walk anyone to set the tone.
Ryan Sanderson doubled and singled while Bartlett (double) and Brady Rowe provided RBI hits. Matt Curry hit two sacrifice flies.
Alec Collins stroked a double and two singles for Central Maine Community College of Auburn. Evan Roberts was the losing pitcher.
In the nightcap, Adam Begos and Curry each doubled and singled with an RBI to propel the Owls. Jesus Garcia and winning pitcher Tommy Collins added run-scoring singles. Collins gave up three hits and two runs (1 earned) with four strikeouts in 4⅓ innings. Tyler McLaughlin worked three no-hit innings and fanned eight to claim the save.
Eric Bauer and Stefan Page had RBIs for the visitors to back losing pitcher Alex Biron.
Husson wins three
At the Winkin Complex in Bangor, the Husson University Eagles improved to 20-19 overall and 15-9 in the North Atlantic Conference after winning three of four games against New England College over the weekend.
Husson swept NEC 6-1 and 5-2 on Saturday and won the second game of a Sunday doubleheader 3-1 after losing the first game 6-4.
In Saturday’s first game, Robert Graff picked up the win after scattering eight hits and two walks while striking out three in 5 ⅔ innings.
Christian Corneil sparked the offense with a two-run inside-the-park home run and Julien Boone chipped in with a double, single and two RBIs. Sam Huston went 3-for-3 and J.T. Whitten drove in a run.
Zachary Carrano and Justin Hopkins each had two hits for NEC (7-25, 6-18).
In the second game, Ben Walls notched the win after allowing five hits and two runs in five innings. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out six before being relieved by Ben Holmes, who recorded a save.
Ryan Rebar led Husson with two hits and an RBI while Conor Maguire added two hits.
Lonnie Cohen and Garrett Waldon each had two hits for NEC.
In Sunday’s first game, NEC’s Vincent Backert shut down the Eagles as he scattered nine hits and a walk while striking out six.
Cohen sparked the offense with a triple and an RBI.
Dan Whitney notched a double, single and an RBI for Husson while Boone added two hits and an RBI.
In the series finale, Husson received another strong pitching outing, this one from Ryan Allender, who allowed just a hit and a run in five innings. He struck out three and walked three before A.J. Purcell and Austin Smith (save) each followed with an inning of scoreless relief.
Huston sparked Husson with a double, single and an RBI. Mike Wong and Corneil also each drove in a run.
Softball
Husson sweeps UMPI
At Presque Isle on Saturday, Alannah Healy pitched a seven-hit shutout to key a 3-0 victory in the first game as the Eagles swept the Owls.
Husson of Bangor won the second game 12-2.
In the opener, Healy struck out seven and walked one and was backed by Sami Cyr, who cranked a two-run home run, a solo homer and a double to account for all three Husson hits.
Hannah Williams sparked the University of Maine-Presque Isle with a double and two singles and Sara Packard provided two singles. Packard pitched the three-hitter and fanned six.
In Game 2, Nicole Andrade drove in four runs with a single and a sacrifice fly as the Eagles won again. Aimee Ball hit a three-run homer, while Mallory Conary and Olivia Smith each tripled and singled. Courtney McIntyre worked four innings of four-hit, two-run ball with three strikeouts for the win.
Dalynn Jacobs doubled and singled to lead the Owls and losing pitcher Packard hit a two-run blast.
Castleton sweeps UMF
At Castleton, Vermont, Kayla Wood and Taylor Paquette each pitched five-inning two-hitters to lead Castleton to the doubleheader sweep of UMaine Farmington 12-0 and 9-0 on Saturday.
Neither pitcher gave up a walk while Wood struck out eight and Paquette struck out six.
Katie Gagne hit a solo homer, singled and drove in two runs to pace Castleton in the first game while Jessica Babcock had a two-run homer, double and single in the second game.
Kylie Cunningham singled in each game for UMF.
Men’s Lacrosse
Lyndon State 14, MMA 8
At Lyndon Center, Vermont, Saturday, Kevin McCarthy and Spencer Aubin each recorded four goals and assist to lead Lyndon State by Maine Maritime Academy in the North Atlantic Conference quarterfinal.
Shane Morin finished with 12 saves for Lyndon (7-7, 6-3 NAC).
Chase Whittemore sparked MMA (7-7, 6-3) with four goals and Dean Samuelson added two goals and three assists. Michael Martel and Alex Grant-Roy each chipped in with a goal and Cody Schell made 10 saves.
Husson 9, Thomas 6
At Boucher Field in Bangor on Saturday, Brandon Corbo scored three goals and assisted on five to lead Husson to its seventh straight berth in the North Atlantic Conference semifinals.
The Eagles will play at Castleton University (Vt.) in the semifinal round.
Brooks Gay and Brandon Bosse each chipped in with two goals for Husson (6-9) while Marc Roy and Trent Sell each added one. Matt Martin made six saves.
Colby Blondin led Thomas (3-9) with two goals and Connor Lamberton finished with 27 saves.
Women’s lacrosse
NEC 16, UMF 8
At Henniker, New Hampshire, Tara Bainbridge scored five goals and assisted on three to power New England College by UMaine-Farmington in a North Atlantic Conference quarterfinal Saturday.
Allison Granata chipped in with three goals and two assists for NEC (11-7) and Mackenzie Meegan made seven saves.
Rhie Jackson sparked UMF (5-8) with three goals while Sierra Gilley added two goals and an assist. Alaina Shorey, Jaclyn Langevin and Mara Balboni each added a goal. Alyssa Arsenault finished with four saves and Danielle Conway had seven.
Castleton 18, Husson 1
At Castleton, Vermont, Briana MacKay scored five goals and added an assist as top-seeded Castleton ousted No. 4 Husson University of Bangor in the North Atlantic Conference semifinals.
Brandi Whittemore tallied four goals and three assists and Maria Ploof posted three goals and three assists for the Spartans (11-5). Grace Johnson added two goals and two assists to back Meghan Els, who made seven saves.
Mattie Russell scored a first-half goal off an Alissa Fallon assist for the 7-7 Eagles. Kaitlin Dolloff made nine stops.
