AUGUSTA, Maine — The busy summer driving season is approaching, and police are cracking down on drivers who don’t buckle up.
Dozens of Maine police departments will launch a two-week effort enforcing seat belt laws, starting Monday, Department of Public Safety Spokesman Stephen McCausland said.
The effort is part of the national Click It or Ticket campaign, and Maine’s kickoff will take place at the I-95 Kittery Welcome Center at 1 p.m. Monday.
The enforcement will run through June 5.
More than half the 156 people killed on Maine’s highways in 2015 were not wearing seat belts, according to Maine Highway Safety Bureau Director Lauren Stewart.
Police will be prepared to issue citations to those who don’t buckle up and those who don’t buckle up their children.
