BERWICK, Maine — Berwick Police arrested a New Hampshire man and charged him with burglary after a woman found him inside her apartment, wearing only sweatpants.

Berwick Police received a call from a resident on School Street on Thursday afternoon.

Police said the woman arrived home and discovered that several of her animals were outside of her apartment and several of the horses to an adjacent barn were roaming free.

The woman entered her apartment and discovered an unknown man standing in her apartment. Police said the woman retreated from the property and called authorities.

Officers were in the area within minutes and learned that the suspect had fled, running away from the property. The suspect was described as a heavier white male, wearing only sweatpants.

Officers chased the suspect on foot. After a several minute foot chase, the suspect was apprehended.

The suspect received minor injuries on his bare feet as he ran through numerous bushes attempting to elude the chasing officers.

Police arrested 53-year-old Todd LeGrand, of Dover, New Hampshire, and charged him with several counts of burglary, theft and violation of conditions of release.

LeGrand had been arrested by the Berwick Police Department on Monday for an outstanding warrant and was transported to the York County Jail.

Police said it appears LeGrand forced his way into two separate apartments where he ate, took a shower and drank several beers from the victim’s refrigerator. LeGrand spent several hours in the two apartments. He also released several of the horses from the adjacent barn.

Police said LeGrand also stole money and other items from the apartments. LeGrand will be arraigned in Springvale District Court Friday.

Berwick Police are reminding residents to make sure their doors and windows in their residences are locked.
