FARMINGTON, Maine — Seven of the state’s top high school basketball players have recently committed to attending the University of Maine at Farmington this fall where they will play for the men’s basketball team.
“Our goal each year is to recruit the top Maine players. As a state university, we believe it is important that our roster represents the state and is a place for talented Maine players to continue their basketball career,” University of Maine at Farmington head coach Dick Meader said in a news release. “Historically, we have prided ourselves on being the only team to consistently win with a solid group of Maine players.”
The recruits include 6-foot guard Amir Moss of Portland, 6-3 guard-forward Riley Robinson of Dirigo in Dixfield, 6-1 guard Isaac Witham of Skowhegan, 6-3 guard-forward Billy Ruby of Gorham, 6-5 center Anthony Owens of Winthrop, 6-3 forward Chase Malloy of Madison and 6-4 forward Jordan Lamb of Gardiner.
Moss averaged 19.9 points and eight rebounds per game for the Bulldogs. He was a Maine Mr. Basketball semifinalist and garnered Maine Telegram Player of the Year and Bangor Daily News All-Maine first team honors.
Robinson averaged 28 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 5.9 assists in his final season at Dirigo. He also was a Maine Mr. Basketball semifinalist and BDN All-Maine first-team selection. He finished with 1,974 career points.
Witham tallied over 1,000 career points for the Indians. He was among the KVAC leaders in points and 3-point field goals.
Ruby had a stellar senior season at Gorham, averaging 15.9 points and 7.8 rebounds. He dished out 2.6 assists and recorded 2.4 steals per game. Ruby was named a Maine Telegram All-State Team recipient.
Owens averaged 9.8 points and 7.4 rebounds per contest and guided the Ramblers to the Class C South final. Owens earned Maine Association of Basketball Coaches McDonald’s All-Star.
Lamb joins Owens in the frontcourt after collecting an All-KVAC first-team award while averaging 14.1 points and 11.1 rebounds per game.
Malloy posted 16.5 points, six rebounds and 3.5 assists per game for the Bulldogs as a senior. He was a Maine Association of Basketball Coaches McDonald’s All-Star.
University of Maine at Farmington opens the season on Nov. 18 against Wheelock College.
