WATERBORO, Maine — Dozens of Massabesic Middle School students were examined Monday after two school buses were involved in an accident.

The buses had minimal damage but one student was taken to the hospital.

Massabesic’s Assistant Superintendent Larry Malone said they are investigating what led to the accident and if the bus drivers broke any school policies for leaving the scene of the accident. The bus drivers reported the accident after coming back to the middle school, but the accident happened in Gorham.

Police said the accident happened around 1:30 Monday afternoon at the corner of South Street and County Road in Gorham.

Massabesic’s assistant superintendent said it involved two middle school buses with about 40 students on each. He said the students were on their way back from a field trip in Portland when one bus hit the back of the other.

According to the district, the buses both had very minimal damage.

They say Massabesic’s school nurse and EMTs from the Waterboro Fire Department examined the students and sent one student to the hospital as a precaution.

Massabesic’s assistant superintendent said they did send a notice home to parents today notifying them of the accident.

He said the school is investigating what happened and if any school policies were broken.
