ROCKLAND, Maine — A local man was sentenced Wednesday to two years in prison for trying to strangle a woman last year.

Joshua J. Warren was sentenced in Knox County Unified Court by Judge Paul Mathews for aggravated assault. The judge accepted the sentence agreement reached between the district attorney’s office and defense attorney Jeremy Pratt which calls for Warren to be sentenced to five years in prison with all but two years suspended.

Warren will be on probation for three years upon his release. During that time, he will be required to participate in a batterer’s intervention program and undergo substance abuse treatment. He also will be required to attend domestic violence court upon his release.

Warren has been held in jail since December, when he was arrested after the victim told police she feared for her life when Warren had his hands around her neck and was squeezing it, according to Assistant District Attorney Christopher Fernald.
