BRUNSWICK, Maine — A 35-year-old man was treated and released from Maine Medical Center early Wednesday morning after he was struck by a Brunswick police cruiser while walking in a crosswalk near Maine Street.
John Ross of Topsham was walking north on Maine Street, crossing the onramp to Mill Street in a fully marked crosswalk at about 1:30 a.m. when Brunswick police Officer Matthew Nicholson, 23, turned left onto the ramp and struck Ross, according to a release from Brunswick police Cmdr. Marc Hagan.
The cruiser’s front windshield was damaged, but Nicholson was not injured, Hagan said.
The crash is under investigation by Brunswick police supervisors, but police initially believe an “extremely hard rainstorm” in the area at the time hindered vision for both men.
“Ross acknowledged that he did not use the crosswalk button and was walking against the signal,” Hagan wrote.
