GORHAM — The University of Southern Maine reopened early Saturday morning after an ammonia leak at the ice arena caused the campus to be evacuated during its summer session, according WMTW-TV.

Efforts to reach the Gorham Fire Department were unsuccessful Saturday.

The leak was reported around 11 p.m. Friday, and about 50 people who were on campus were evacuated, the Westbrook television station reported.

“Ammonia from the arena’s ice-making equipment leaked and triggered the alarm. Gorham authorities are unclear how much ammonia escaped,” the station said on its website. “No one was inside the ice arena at the time of the leak.”

Fire crews from Westbrook, Standish, Windham, Scarborough and Gray were called in to assist, according to WMTW-TV.

No injuries were reported, but two people, including a firefighter, were evaluated at the scene.
