Boston Red Sox pitcher Joe Kelly will make a rehab start for the franchise’s Double-A affiliate, the Portland Sea Dogs, when they play the New Hampshire Fisher Cats Wednesday night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium in Manchester, New Hampshire, according to a MassLive.com report.

Kelly, a right-hander who has been sidelined since suffering a groin injury on June 8 during a start with Triple-A Pawtucket, will pitch a game for the Sea Dogs and another for the Lowell Spinners, a Red Sox Single-A minor league team.

Red Sox manager John Farrell told MassLive.com that Kelly would return to Pawtucket after the two rehab games and work toward a role in the Red Sox bullpen as a late-inning reliever.

Kelly, 28, started the season with the Red Sox but struggled and was sent to Pawtucket where he suffered the injury and was placed on the disabled list. He was 2-0 with an 8.46 ERA in six starts with the Red Sox.

Last season, Kelly compiled a 10-6 record with the Red Sox and a 4.82 ERA in 25 starts.
