A 59-year-old Georgia man was flown to safety on Wednesday after he broke his ankle while hiking on a remote section of the Appalachian Trail, according to the Maine Warden Service.

Patrick Burnes of Buford, Georgia, was hiking south with a small party near the Maine and New Hampshire border on a remote portion of the trail near Mount Carlo when the injury occurred, Cpl. John MacDonald said in a news release Wednesday evening.

Nearly a dozen Maine game wardens joined two New Hampshire conservation officers to attempt the 2-mile carry-out at about 10:45 a.m.

The Maine Forest Service joined the operation in the afternoon, and Burnes was taken off the mountain by a Maine Forest Service helicopter shortly after 6 p.m.

Burnes was taken to Androscoggin Valley Hospital in Berlin, New Hampshire, for treatment.

Also assisting in the rescue efforts were Mahoosuc Search and Rescue, Androscoggin Valley Search and Rescue of New Hampshire, the U.S. Forest Service and Berlin, New Hampshire, emergency medical personnel.
