BANGOR, Maine — The Bangor Police Department is offering condolences and support to Dallas police in the wake of a shooting Thursday night that took the lives of five officers in the Texas city.
“We cannot change what happened in Dallas,” Bangor police Sgt. Tim Cotton wrote in a post on the department’s Facebook page. “We can make a decision on how we go forward.”
Cotton noted in the post that Bangor police have had “an overflowing of wonderful support toward us” from members of the public.
“Your local police department, nationwide, sometimes become the surrogate that you reach out to in times like this,” Cotton wrote. “Since we are local to many of our followers, your feelings get rained down in the form of food and cards and warm regards. You are great people and we love our supporters.
“The men and women of the Bangor Police Department ask that if you feel the need to give anything, please send it to the Dallas Police Department. I am sure you will be able to soon find addresses and locations to pour out your support and we will as well.
“The dead and injured officers have families and kids,” Cotton wrote. “We do too, but they need you more right now.”
