Morrill’s Benjamin scores PASS win

SCARBOROUGH, Maine – Travis Benjamin of Morrill nailed down his first Pro All Stars Series North Super Late Model victory of the season Tuesday night at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway’s Southern Maine Chrysler Dodge Jeep 150.

It was Benjamin’s first victory with the Petit Motorsports team he joined this season.

Benjamin was in control both early and late in the 150-lap event, battling several competitors for position during the middle stages of the race. At the end it was Scarborough’s Garrett Hall pushing Benjamin across the finish line, falling just short of claiming his third series win this year.

Both Hall and third-place finisher Joey Polewarczyk Jr. of Hudson, New Hampshire, mounted serious challenges to Benjamin’s lead, especially on restarts. Former Beech Ridge track champion Dave Farrington Jr. of Jay led a healthy portion of the race en route to a fourth-place finish.

Cowboys top most valuable teams list

The Dallas Cowboys unseated Spanish soccer club Real Madrid for top spot on a list of the world’s 50 most valuable sports teams, according to a Forbes poll released on Wednesday that was dominated by NFL franchises.

The value of the National Football League’s Cowboys rose 25 percent to $4 billion compared to last year, while the value of 10-time European champions Real Madrid rose 12 percent to $3.65 billion over the same period, Forbes said in a statement.

It marks the first time since the list’s inception in 2011 that a non-soccer club has taken the top spot on the list.

Soccer’s Barcelona ($3.55 billion), Major League Baseball’s New York Yankees ($3.4 billion) and Manchester United ($3.32 billion) rounded out the top five.

The NFL had 27 franchises listed in the top-50 followed by European soccer and the National Basketball Association, who each had eight teams on the list, followed by MLB with seven.

Michigan State player claims Green slapped him

Michigan State football player Jermaine Edmondson claimed in a police report that Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green used an open-hand slap to his face during a confrontation at an East Lansing, Michigan, restaurant.

The exchange led to Green being arrested on assault charges at Conrad’s Grill. The 26-year-old, whose blood alcohol content was 0.10, is scheduled for arraignment on July 20, according to a court document.

The maximum penalty Green could face if found guilty of the assault charge is a $500 fine and/or 90 days in jail.

Green, a member of Team USA for the Rio Olympics this summer, played four seasons for Michigan State under coach Tom Izzo. Green is scheduled to attend Team USA’s camp in Las Vegas July 18-21.
