BANGOR, Maine — A 20-year-old Anson man suffered serious injuries in a single-vehicle crash early Sunday morning, Somerset County Chief Deputy James Ross said Sunday afternoon in a news release.

The crash happened about 3 a.m. on Valley Road, also known as Route 234, when Joshua Houle apparently drifted off the road at a corner, struck a utility pole and then several trees before crashing into a large pine tree, Ross said.

Houle was off the road for approximately 400 feet before he came to a final stop, Ross said.

Houle, who had been pinned between the dash and the driver’s seat, had to be extricated from the wreckage by emergency responders, Ross said.

Houle appeared to have suffered head injuries, broken bones and possible internal injuries, Ross said.

Ross said speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the crash and that it appeared that Houle was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Houle initially was taken to Redington-Fairview Hospital in Skowhegan but later was flown to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

The car Houle was driving, a 1996 Dodge Intrepid, was demolished.

Detective Michael Ross was assisted at the scene by members of the Anson Fire Department and AMS Ambulance.

The crash remains under investigation and no further information is available at this time, Ross said.
