LEWISTON, Maine — An Auburn woman accused of dropping a dog off outside an animal shelter and driving off is scheduled to be in court Monday.
The dog was hit and killed by a car.
Police charged the owner, Sarah Vye, in February in a case that got a lot of public attention.
Authorities say Vye’s actions led to the death of the dog.
Investigators say, in January, Vye abandoned the dog at the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society while it was closed and the dog was eventually hit and killed by a car.
Police say surveillance video shows Vye dropping off her yellow lab named Abby and leaving without her.
Vye is charged with one count of animal cruelty, in this case a class D-misdemeanor, meaning the penalty she’s facing is up to 364 days in jail and a $2,000 fine.
One day after the dog was found dead. Vye called a Portland radio station, claiming she left the dog at the shelter to protect her children. In April, she pleaded not guilty.
A dispositional conference hearing is scheduled to start around 8:30 a.m. Evidence and any pre-trial motions will be brought up in front of a judge.
The conference could end with a plea deal or the next court date will be set.
