NEWFIELD, Maine — A Massachusetts man was arrested Saturday after he forced his way into a Newfield home and then assaulted a deputy from the York County Sheriff’s Office who was attempting to subdue him.

Trevor Cox, 19, of Lynnfield, Massachusetts, was charged with aggravated criminal trespassing and assault on a police officer, both of which are Class C felony crimes punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000, the York County Sheriff’s Office said Sunday in a Facebook post.

The series of events that led to the arrest began Saturday evening when a Newfield woman called the police to report a burglary in progress. She said a man, later identified as Cox, was on her porch screaming that somebody was after him and that he had taken drugs. When the woman opened the door, Cox forced his way inside.

The homeowner told her two children, ages 12 and 17, to go to another room and told Cox to leave the residence. When he grabbed the woman’s wrist, her dog got agitated, growled and got between the two, frightening Cox into releasing his grip.

While that was happening, a vehicle drove into her driveway with two other men, apparently friends of Cox. One man got out of the car and got on the porch, trying to convince Cox to leave.

When Cox walked out onto the porch, the woman slammed the door, and she called the police. The woman told police she heard yelling on the porch between the two men and Cox got agitated and put his fist through her living room window. The vehicle in which his accomplices were riding fled the scene before the first deputy arrived.

The deputy confronted Cox, who was bleeding profusely from the forearm as a result of cuts he suffered from breaking the window, and he attempted to secure him in handcuffs. Cox, however, broke free and started punching the deputy, striking him around the face, head and neck with the hand around which there still was a secured handcuff.

The deputy tried to restrain Cox but he would not stop resisting and fighting. The deputy was forced to use his Taser on him several times, but after the Taser completed its cycle, Cox continued to assault the deputy.

About 10 minutes later, a second deputy arrived to assist, and they were able to constrain Cox.

The deputy suffered small cuts and face contusions from the altercation, and he was treated and released at an area hospital.

After Cox was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries and evaluation for drug abuse, he was taken to York County Jail in Alfred, where he is being held on $5,000 cash bail. He is scheduled to be arraigned via video at Springvale District Court Tuesday.
