Mets’ Familia arrested on domestic violence charge
New York Mets All-Star closer Jeurys Familia was arrested earlier this week on a domestic violence charge, according to a complaint filed in municipal court in Fort Lee, New Jersey.
Familia allegedly caused “bodily injury to another” in an incident at a Fort Lee apartment early on Monday morning.
According to the complaint, an accuser whose name was redacted sustained a scratch to the chest and a bruise to the right cheek.
Office Tony Pickens said in the report that he “found probable cause to believe that domestic violence had occurred.”
Police responded to the incident in Fort Lee at 2:22 a.m. after receiving calls about a dispute. According to published reports, Familia lives in Fort Lee with his wife, Bianca, and their 1-year-old son.
Familia was identified as Jeurys F. Mojica in the arrest report — the F standing for Familia.
The Mets acknowledged awareness of the circumstances.
“The matter was brought to our attention and we are monitoring the situation,” the Mets said in a statement.
Coincidentally, Familia is featured in a new advertising campaign to help stop domestic violence.
Roethlisberger could start Sunday for Steelers
Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday that quarterback Ben Roethlisberger might be ready to play Sunday at Baltimore, 21 days after surgery to repair a meniscus tear in his knee.
Previously, Tomlin did not speculate on the length of absence for the 34-year-old Roethlisberger, who sustained the injury in the first half of a play in which he was intercepted by safety Reshad Jones during a 30-15 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Oct. 16.
“When he is healthy, he’ll be back with us,” Tomlin said.
The Steelers are coming off of their bye week but have back-to-back losses to the Dolphins and Patriots. At 4-3, Pittsburgh remains in first place in the AFC North over the 3-4-1 Cincinnati Bengals and 3-4 Ravens.
Flyers’ Gordon out at least a week
Philadelphia Flyers veteran forward Boyd Gordon is expected to be sidelined at least a week with an upper-body injury, the team announced Tuesday.
Gordon has scored one goal in eight games and leads the team by winning 52.4 percent of his faceoffs.
The 33-year-old native of Saskatchewan signed with the Flyers on the first day of free agency this offseason. He spent the 2015-16 season with the Arizona Coyotes, with whom he recorded two goals and two assists in 65 games.
Gordon has 56 goals and 105 assists in 701 career contests.
Thunder acquire F Grant from 76ers
The Oklahoma City Thunder acquired forward Jerami Grant from the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday for veteran forward Ersan Ilyasova and a conditional first-round pick.
The 22-year-old Grant averaged 9.7 points and 4.7 rebounds last season in his second NBA campaign. He is averaging 8.0 points and 3.5 rebounds in two games this season.
Ilyasova has career averages of 10.6 points and 6.0 rebounds over eight-plus NBA seasons. He spent his first seven campaigns with the Milwaukee Bucks and split last season between the Detroit Pistons and Orlando Magic.
“This is a unique deal that allows us to address both short-term needs and longer-term goals at the same time,” Philadelphia president of basketball operations Bryan Colangelo said in a statement.
