Danielle Aviani scored two goals for the University of Maine field hockey team Friday, but it wasn’t enough in an America East quarterfinal.
The University of California scored two goals in a span of a minute late in the second half, with the winner coming from Katrina Carter, to end the Black Bears’ season, 3-2, at Pacific University in Stockton, California.
Cal (5-12) will play in Saturday’s semifinal against Bay Area rival Stanford. UMaine ends its season with a 13-7 record.
Cal never led until Carter’s goal with just over three minutes remaining in regulation, shortly after the Golden Bears had converted on a penalty stroke.
The Black Bears took the lead late in the first half on a goal from Aviani.
Aviani took a couple of dribbles in the center of the circle and fired a shot into the right corner of the cage.
Cal struck back early in the second half, with Nicole Henriksson deflecting a Katrina Carter feed home.
UMaine regained its advantage later on a penalty corner, with Aviani getting her second of the afternoon by swiping a shot into the right side of the cage.
Samantha Wagg and Lilla Tilton-Flood assisted on Aviani’s goals for UMaine.
With just under four minutes remaining in regulation, Cal was awarded a penalty stroke, and Keats Iwanaga’s high shot to the left side of the cage beat UMaine goalie Emily Corbett, who split time in the cage with Emma Cochran, and enabled the Golden Bears to tie it.
Cal grabbed its first lead shortly after, with Carter scoring her fourth goal of the season.
The Black Bears pulled Corbett and pushed to try to get the equalizer, but they were unable to do so.
Cal outshot UMaine 21-14. Cochran had five saves, and Corbett had one for the Black Bears.
