WOOLWICH, Maine — Quick work by area firefighters following a Thursday afternoon crash on Route 1 kept diesel fuel from draining into the Sasanoa River.

Just before 4:30 p.m. Thursday, a tractor-trailer collided with a passenger car near what is known as the “dike,” sending the truck into the guardrail and causing 20 to 25 gallons of diesel fuel to spill onto Route 1, Woolwich fire Chief Mike Demers said Friday.

Traffic was diverted from Route 1 onto George Wright Road for several hours as firefighters from Woolwich and Bath, working with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection and local contractor Jack A. Shaws & Sons, worked to keep the fuel from draining into the river.

The driver of the car, whose name was not immediately available, was taken to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

The driver of the truck, whose name was also not available, was not injured, Demers said.

No additional information was available Friday morning from the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office.

Brunswick police are reconstructing the crash.
