WALDOBORO, Maine — The Waldoboro Police Department has identified a 79-year-old Waldoboro man as the victim of a fatal crash involving a pickup truck and a tractor-trailer Wednesday morning on Route 1 in Waldoboro near Bullwinkle’s Steakhouse.

Rody Conway, 79, of Waldoboro, the driver of the pickup truck, died in the crash, according to Waldoboro police Officer Larry Hesseltine.

Chief Bill Labombarde said he does not believe there are any other injuries.

Andrew Pierce of Newport was driving a tractor-trailer, a milk truck registered to Newport-based Lyle Pierce Inc., north on Route 1 at the time of the crash. The crash took place when Conway, driving a small Chevrolet pickup truck, attempted to enter Route 1.

Hesseltine said the drivers were the sole occupants of each vehicle at the time of the crash.

The officer said both vehicles traveled about 100 feet after the crash before coming to rest on the edge of the southbound lane. The tractor-trailer came to rest on its right side with the pickup truck stopped to the front and left of the larger vehicle.

Hesseltine said the tractor-trailer attempted to avoid the collision by swerving into the southbound lane but was unable to do so and “T-boned” the pickup. The cause of the incident is under investigation.

Hesseltine said accident reconstruction is being conducted by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office. The Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement unit also dealt with the crash.

Waldoboro Emergency Management Agency Director Kyle Santheson said Route 1 would be restricted to one lane of traffic while crews work to remove the tractor-trailer from the side of the highway.

Santheson said he expects the process to take some time and urged motorists to use other routes or expect delays if they plan to travel Route 1 this afternoon.

The Lincoln County Communications Center dispatched crews to the crash at 9:34 a.m.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Maine State Police, Waldoboro Emergency Medical Services, the Waldoboro Fire Department and the Waldoboro Police Department went to the crash.
