TOPSHAM, Maine — A Massachusetts woman suffered a broken back and cracked ribs after her vehicle collided with a Topsham police cruiser Sunday morning.

Maine State Police said Nancy Bishop-Barry, 79, was driving east on Lewiston Road, or Route 196, around 11:30 a.m. Sunday when Topsham Officer Donald Cowles approached from behind, with his lights on, on the way to a reported accident.

Bishop-Barry pulled over to allow Cowles to pass but did not come to a complete stop, state police said. Cowles make a 180-degree turn to go to a nearby accident when Bishop-Barry pulled back on the road and hit the driver’s-side door of the cruiser.

Cowles was treated at a hospital and then released. Bishop-Barry was taken to Maine Medical Center with injuries that were serious but not considered life-threatening.

Lewiston Road was closed briefly as state police investigated the crash.

No charges will be filed, police said.
