WINDHAM, Maine — A 56-year-old woman who left her assisted-living home in a wheelchair was seriously injured Wednesday afternoon when she was struck by a vehicle while her wheelchair was in the middle of River Road, according to police.

The woman, whose name was not immediately released, is expected to survive, according to a news release from Windham police Sgt. Raymond S. Williams.

Emergency crews went to River Road near Bishop Drive just after 4:30 p.m. and found that the woman had been struck by a northbound vehicle driven by a 69-year-old Windham woman, whose name was not immediately released. The driver was not injured.

Police said the woman in the wheelchair was wearing dark clothing at the time. The incident remains under investigation, but Williams said speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash, and “it appears to be pedestrian error.”
