A former Bangor High School player will join the Husson University women’s soccer team for the upcoming season, the school announced Wednesday.
Megan Conner, a center midfielder, was a four-year varsity starter at Bangor and helped the Rams capture two regional championships and a Class A state title in 2015.
Conner earned All-KVAC second-team honors as a junior and first-team accolades as a senior for coach Joe Johnson.
In addition to playing at the varsity level, Conner played for Seacoast United Black Bear and River City Football Club club teams.
She also played basketball and softball at Bangor, and plans to major in elementary and physical education.
Colby coach honored
Colby College women’s lacrosse coach Karen Henning was honored on Wednesday as the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Pilgrim Region Coach of the Year.
Henning skippered Colby to the program’s third NESCAC title in 10 seasons, and finished the regular season on a 13-game winning streak.
Colby also won league titles in 2008 and 2009, and in both of those seasons Henning earned coach of the year honors.
Henning is a former University of Maryland player who won two national titles with the Terrapins. Colby defeated three NCAA tournament teams in the NESCAC tournament to claim its title.
SMCC coach gets published
Matt Richards, who has coached men’s basketball at Southern Maine Community College since 2003, recently had some coaching tips published by a small-college basketball website.
In the post, Richards spoke about team-building, creating chemistry and the importance of players exhibiting a team-first mentality.
“When you receive a great pass, the player receiving that pass should give a finger pointed in their direction of the player who passed it to them,” Richards wrote. “Simple, right? Look at your practice and see how many times that happens. You most likely will be amazed at how infrequently it takes place.”
Richards also spoke about how team captains should be encouraged to sell the team-first philosophy to younger players.
Richards led SMCC to a 23-8 record last winter and the Seawolves earned a trip to the United States Collegiate Athletic Association national tournament.
