The driver who fled after a crash with a cyclist in downtown Bangor on Tuesday was unlikely to face charges had he or she stuck around, police said.

The cyclist cut into the crosswalk at Cross Street from the Main Street sidewalk and slammed into the side of the unknown driver’s car about 4:30 p.m., which likely caused the crash, Bangor police Lt. Cathy Rumsey said.

The driver “did not appear to do anything wrong except leave the scene,” Rumsey said Tuesday night, adding that the investigation is not finished.

Witnesses told police the motorist was “driving a dark car” and sped up Cross to Columbia Street, Rumsey said.

The cyclist, William Gross, 22, of Bangor, was evaluated and released from Eastern Maine Medical Center shortly after the crash.

Police ask that the driver, and anyone with information about the crash, call Officer Jordan Bragen at 947-7384 ext. 5763, Rumsey said.

Leaving the scene of a crash in which there are no injuries is a Class E crime that carries penalties of up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine, according to state law.
