BELFAST, Maine — Belfast’s most notorious escape artists are at it again.

Louis and Mowgli, a pair of Nigerian dwarf goats that gained Internet fame in April after they escaped their pen and were discovered in a neighbor’s garage eating her cats’ food, were apprehended by police yet again on Monday.

Late Monday morning, a homeowner about a quarter mile from the goats’ High Street home called police to let them know that a pair of strange goats were in his garden having a snack.

Belfast police Sgt. Daniel Fitzpatrick responded to the call, as he’s familiar with the pair. When Louis and Mowgli first broke out in April, he was the one who rounded the goats up, put them in the back of his cruiser and spent most of the day cruising the streets of Belfast until he could find their owner.

Fitzpatrick said the goats seemed excited to see him again, and hopped right into his cruiser when he opened the back door.

Fitzpatrick returned the goats to their home around 12:30 p.m. Monday, and walked the perimeter of the fence with the owners to try to figure out how the animals keep escaping. The gate was secured, they couldn’t spot any defects or holes in the 5-foot fence, and none of the obstacles the goats play on are close enough to the fence that they’d be able to jump over.

Louis and Mowgli also escaped about a week ago, and were ultimately rounded up near the footbridge.

“We’re completely in the dark as to how they keep getting out,” Fitzpatrick said Monday about an hour after he brought the delinquents safely home.
