RYE, New Hampshire — Police are looking for the owner of an iguana found strolling on Sagamore Road Monday morning.

Police Chief Kevin Walsh said he received a call about the iguana from Hampton Police Chief Rich Sawyer, who first spotted the creature at about 10:30 a.m. Walsh said he asked Sawyer, “Do you know the difference between an iguana and a squirrel?”

When Sawyer said he did, Walsh responded.

The Rye chief said a citizen attempted to get the iguana out of the road with a leash before police arrived, and was bitten. A Rye officer wrangled the iguana into a pet cage and it’s now being kept safely at the town’s police headquarters until its owner can be located.

Walsh said he hopes that happens soon.

The iguana is two feet long and is “obviously someone’s pet,” Walsh said.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call Rye police at (603) 964-7450.
