A Bangor couple was arrested Thursday on drug charges after state and federal drug agents and Bangor police raided an Ohio Street apartment, according to the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency.
Peter Spann, 54, was charged Thursday with aggravated trafficking in heroin and crack cocaine, a Class A crime. The charges were elevated because 100B Ohio St., the apartment from which he allegedly dealt drugs, was within 1,000 feet of a city park.
Diane Spann, 54, was charged Thursday with possession of heroin, a Class C crime.
Bail was set for Peter Spann at $25,000 cash because of three previous drug convictions, and at $2,000 for his wife, the MDEA said.
Both remained Sunday at the Penobscot County Jail in Bangor unable to post bail, according to jail personnel.
Investigators searched the apartment Thursday night, the MDEA said. They seized nine grams of heroin, with a suspected street value of $2,500, $3,500 in cash, and other evidence of drug trafficking.
If convicted, Peter Spann faces up to 30 years in prison and a fine of up to $50,000. Diane Spann faces up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000 if convicted.
The MDEA did not say if the Spanns’ arrests was connected to the arrest the previous day in Bangor of Jeremy Cruz, 28, of Bronx, New York.
It was the second time in nearly six years that alleged drug trafficking has been uncovered at that building, according to the MDEA.
The building raided Thursday is under the same ownership it was in early November 2011 when the MDEA, DEA and Bangor police busted a crack cocaine ring working out of the same apartment where the Spanns lived, the MDEA said. That investigation led to the federal prosecution of more than a dozen people who, evidence showed, had distributed about 10 pounds of crack cocaine from 100 Ohio Street.
People who have information about the investigation involving the Spanns or the illegal sale of drugs in the state are urged to call the MDEA tipline at 800-452-6457.
