ORONO — The University of Maine Baseball Winter Hitting Clinic will be held in two sessions at Mahaney Dome. Session 1 will be held Saturdays, Dec. 2, 9 and 16, costing $100; and Session 2, Saturdays, Jan. 13, 20 and 27 and Feb. 3, costing $150. This year’s winter workouts will focus exclusively on hitting and will include 75-90 minutes of hitting instruction. It is recommended that younger players hit 4:30-6 p.m. and older players 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Hitting drills will be held in the Mitchell Batting Pavilion and the Mahaney Dome. All aspects of hitting will be touched on from situational awareness to fundamentals of the swing. Each day a specific skill will be worked on. BASKETBALL
BANGOR — Bangor Parks and Recreation will offer House Basketball, a recreational program geared for all ability levels divided by boys and girls and into grades 3-4 and grades 5-6, Dec. 2-Feb. 3. Teams practice once a week and games are played Saturdays. Minimal game travel is required, but can range up to 15 miles away. Game playing time is split as equally as possible. No tryouts. Everyone will be put on a team. Cost is $55 for Bangor residents and $55 for nonresidents. Step Up Basketball will be offered to second grade students Dec. 16-Jan. 27. Times have not been determined. The program, designed to transition young basketball players from an instructional program to playing full games, will have 30 minutes of practice focusing on skills and game knowledge; 30 minutes of controlled and structured game play; and teams will be split up each week. BANGOR — The Elks Hoop Shoot, a free-throw shooting competition for youngsters ages 8-13, will be held Saturday, Dec. 9, at the James Doughty Middle School on Fifth St—. The event, sponsored by Bangor Elks Lodge No. 244, will take place at 3 p.m. Players will compete in age divisions determined by their age on April 1, 2018. SOUTH PORTLAND — The fourth annual Santa Hustle Maine 5K and Half Marathon will be held Sunday, Dec. 3, beginning and ending at The Maine Mall. Participants will receive Santa hats, beards and shirts to wear while running, finisher medals and candy cane socks. Kids Dash participants will receive Santa hats and beards, race bibs and finisher ribbons. There will be cookie and candy stations along the course and there will be a party after the race. A portion of the profits will be donated to Easter Seals. The event also is an official drop-off spot for unwrapped toys for the Toys for Tots program. PORTLAND — NRCM’s 10th annual Polar Bear Dip and Dash will be held Sunday, Dec. 31; walk or run a 5K, plunge into the Atlantic Ocean, or both; 5K registration opens at 9 a.m. at the Back Cove Parking lot, race begins at 11 a.m.; dip set for noon at East End Beach. A shuttle will return participants to the Back Cove parking lot after the dip. The non-refundable registration fee to dip, dash, or both is $35.
